Upper School Information

North Cliff Information | District Information

The Upper School, in the Englewood Cliffs School District, offers a quality program of education for all of its students, Grades 3-8. There is continuous emphasis on collaboration between administration, teachers and parents that results in a nurturing, child-centered environment.

The educational program at Upper School is enhanced by small class sizes and grade level common preparation times for teachers at each grade level. The District’s web-based curriculum is implemented in an environment where well-trained staff implements strategies such as cooperative learning and differentiated instruction to ensure the success of all students.

Instructionally, Upper School staff has embraced new research-based mathematics and a writing program that will provide a foundation for the success of our students in these subject areas. Staff development, through partnerships with colleges and universities, provide our teachers with the resources to successfully implement these new programs.

Technology has been an ongoing initiative and has been widely accepted and utilized in the school’s classrooms. Through support of the instructional technology coordinator, technology related strategies and programs are incorporated to enhance the instructional program of all of the classes in the school. The implementation of the Homework Web Site has been an enhancement that provides communication with the parents and guardians in our district. Through the addition of the “Weather Bug” to our educational program, students are able to access information on a daily basis concerning local and national weather.

Upper School continues to emphasize varied educational opportunities. Our Related Arts and Cultural Heritage projects are outstanding yearly events that fuel the enthusiasm of all the students and staff. There are a multitude of cultural activities, assemblies, field trips and holiday programs that foster the celebration of the wonderful diversity found in our district. Our Peer to Peer Leadership Program, D.A.R.E. Program, Student of the Month, and Artist of the Month Programs are both educational and motivational. Health and safety information provided in the curriculum help to broaden the vision of our students and serve as preventative programs.

Students are taught civic pride and become aware of their civic responsibilities beginning in the early grades. They are taught to respect themselves and respect the rights of others, thus creating a pleasant, tension-free school environment. Through various in-school programs, our students become involved in community service. Community service and civic awareness is also fostered through the involvement of our parents in the active Parent-Teacher-Association (PTA). This organization, through fund raising activities, sponsors a multitude of student activities including artistic and cultural arts programs and field trips for each grade level during the year.
